Tips to Improve Your Shopify Store’s User Experience

The concept of user experience gets talked about a lot.  Our Shopify designers talk about, and so do a lot of Shopify experts in India and around the world.  There would have been hundreds and thousands of blogs written about the topic, and they continue to get written till date.  However, the fact that you are still reading about user experience means that the topic is relevant and important even today.  Many of our Shopify design service customers ask us the reason for our focus on user experience.  Our answer is fairly straightforward. Anyone who visits your store has an experience.  If that experience is bad, they will leave the site without buying and perhaps not trust you again.

Here are some tips you can use to improve your Shopify store’s user experience:

  1. Use of Videos:  Product photos have been used ever since the inception of eCommerce.  The reason why they still get used is because they are effective. Videos, however, can add a new dimension of effectiveness to your product listing.  Videos let your users get to the see the product in use, and get a good idea about the size of the products, how it looks, and ore. Research after research has suggested that customers are more likely to buy a product if they watched a video.
  2. Strategically Placed Trust Signs:  When we offer our Shopify development service, we always insist our customers to place their SSL verification certificates, anti-virus status, or payment-related logos at prominent places.  It’s not just about putting them on the footer of the website, but to continuously reinforce their benefits. You can add these trust signs in product descriptions as a reminder that the transaction is going to be secure.  Additionally, you need to broaden your perspective about what trust signs are. In our understanding, a customer testimonial is an equally important trust sign, and it should be placed strategically on the website.
  3. Tightly Written Product Descriptions:  Gone are those days when product descriptions used to contain long content paragraphs.  Today, it is about making your descriptions sharp and easy to ready. Most people skim through the text.  Therefore, you need to make your product descriptions skimmable. In other words, your shoppers must be able to get the gist of your product by skimming through the content.  Making use of bullet points can go a long way in achieving this goal.
  4. Easy to Zoom Product Images:  Are you still using a low-quality photo of your product?  If that’s the case, how do you expect your shoppers to see relevant product details?  Product photos are the same as holding a product in a bricks-and-mortar store. Therefore, you need to place big, high-resolution pictures.  Plus, you need to also have a handy zoom feature. When you, or your Shopify designers, are picking a Shopify theme; you should ensure that the theme has proper product zoom features.
  5. Social Signups:  People don’t like to signup on websites.  They consider it to be a waste of time. Therefore, many drop-offs happen at that stage.  You need to, thus, make it easy for people signup or register on your store. Social signups can help you with that.  Your shoppers can now signup on your website by entering their Google, Twitter, Facebook, or other pertinent login credentials.  This is known to help reduce resistance to registering on a website.
  6. Optimized Content:  As we know, Home Page is not the most visited page on your website.  However, Home Page reflects your brand value. Therefore, you need to combine artistic flavours and scientific optimization to your home page.  You need to create a home page that reflects your brand’s vision, builds trust, and makes people stay longer on the website. The most important piece of content should be put above the fold.  You want your important content to catch people’s attention in the first few seconds.
  7. Proper Use of Colors:  Use of flashy colors should be confined to flyers.  Such flashy colors on the website are hard on the eyes.  Think of some of the popular websites. All of them make use of soothing color scheme that is derived from their logo.  This makes your website subtle, but way more efficient in terms of its user experience.
  8. Strategic Use of Fonts:  You don’t want your shoppers to squint in order to read your content.  Therefore, you should use normalized font-size. Our team of Shopify designers believe that 16 px size is reasonable for a website.  Moreover, we advise that the line spacing should be strategically used as well.  Too much or too little will impede your content’s success. Moreover, the color of the text should be in contract with the background of the website.  What if you used a light color with a white background? It wouldn’t be visible. Therefore, you use black or dark grey. Finally, use of fancy fonts is a complete no-no.  You should always use standard fonts on your website.
  9. Optimize Website:  None of the UX you do matters if the store doesn’t load quickly enough.  Shopify provides a great level of optimization. Therefore, you should carefully pick the theme that allows your website to load lightening fast.  Moreover, it is also important to ensure that the website is optimized for mobile. Mobile internet traffic has exceeded that of desktop, and therefore your store should be responsive and provide an equally good user experience on mobile and desktop.
  10. Quick Product View:  This is now a default on most Shopify Themes.  The benefit of quick product view is that you can show more details of a product without having them leave the main product page.  This goes a long way in making people stick longer on your website.
